Introduction to the special issue on logotherapy and existential analysis

Hegger, A.T.

1-5

EN

We present one interview and nine articles in this volume. They will give an impression on what is going on in the world of logotherapy and existential analysis and in its border areas. We divide the articles in five sections: (1) classical logotherapy and existential analysis; (2) outsider perspectives; (3) research and practical applications; (4) religion and spirituality; and (5) a guide for life. We will give a short introduction to each section. The contributions are written by second, third and fourth generation logotherapists, Frankl being the first. He himself educated a group of students, the second generation. They helped to develop logotherapeutic institutions, conducted research and widened the scope of logotherapy and existential analysis. Elisabeth Lukas belongs to this group. The third generation may have met Frankl, but got their professional education at the end of Frankl’s life, somewhere in the eighties and nineties of the last century. They received their education in logotherapy and existential analysis from the second generation. We have two examples of this generation in Batthyány and Wijsbek. Finally there is the fourth generation, educated in logotherapy in the twenty-first century. They are often creative in finding new ways. We have four articles written by this generation: Jacky van der Goor, Jeanine Geijtenbeek, Ellen van Son together with Phillipe van Heusden and Annelies van der Ouw, and Timo van Kempen. We also involved outsiders in this volume who don’t belong to the community of classical logotherapists: Alfried Längle, Roy Baumeister and Nathalie André, and Chrystal Park and Jeanine Slattery. It is an honor to have all these outstanding authors in Psyche & Geloof.

Section 1: Classical logotherapy and existential analysis

Hegger, A.T.

6-8

EN

This opening section is an introduction to Frankl’s logotherapy and existential analysis. We start this introduction with a short biography in which we emphasize the years before the Second World War, because sometimes Frankl is supposed to have developed his ideas in the concentration camps, while in fact they arose long before the war.

Living ‘tragic optimism’ in real life: An introductory interview on logotherapy with Alexander Batthyány

Hegger, A.T., & Hijweege, N.M.

9-26

EN

To introduce this special issue of Psyche & Geloof on Frankl’s logotherapy and existential analysis we had an extensive interview with Alexander Batthyány. It is ‘a corona interview’. We did not meet face to face. The interview developed in exchanging question and answer by mail. Dr. Batthyány is currently one of the leading figures in the world of logotherapy and existential analysis. He provides textbooks and scientific publications. Not only does he have an overview of the history and intentions of the work of Viktor Frankl, he is also well informed about the most recent developments. We are honored to have dr. Batthyány as a first guide in our exploration of logotherapy and existential analysis.

Vom Parterre zum Dachboden: Viktor E. Frankls Logotherapie

Lukas, E.

27-29

NL

Section 2: Outsider perspectives

Hegger, A.T.

30-33

EN

In this section we bring together three authors who owe much to Frankl but are expanding logotherapy and existential analysis beyond its sources. One of them, Alfried Längle, developed a phenomenological approach. Because he differentiated himself from the classical logotherapy and existential analyses, we will introduce him in some detail. Two others, Roy Baumeister and Chrystal Park and their collaborators, broadened the concept of meaning in their search for empirical evidence in the science of meaning.

Existenzanalyse als spirituelle Tiefenpsychologie

Längle, A.

34-45

NL

Understanding meaning and its place in human life and psychotherapy

Baumeister, R.F., & André, N.

46-56

EN

We provide a general overview of how to understand meaning. The term invokes two different concepts. Denotative meaning, as in the meaning of symbols and sentences, is a basis for thinking that forms connections and thereby imposes organization on self and world. Existential meaning is how people understand their lives, which is typically in the form of an intertwined set of stories that exemplify values. Frankl’s concept of purpose remains an important foundation for understanding life’s meaning, especially if updated to include values, efficacy, coherence, understanding, and self-worth. Simple animal minds process meaning but only human ones construct and negotiate shared global meanings. Meaning and happiness overlap substantially but have five important differences. In therapy, issues of both kinds of meaning may be important even if not immediately apparent.

Advances in the science of meaning in the context of trauma

Park, C.L., & Slattery, J.M.

57-68

EN

In this article, we present the meaning making model, a framework of the processes in which individuals engage to make sense of traumatic experiences. We illustrate this model with current research findings, specifically highlighting the roles that meaning in life plays in these meaning making processes. Specifically, we describe the different aspects of global and situational meaning, meaning making, and meaning made and present recent research findings relevant to each aspect. We illustrate some of the clinical applications of this model using a case example. We conclude with suggestions for future research and guidelines for clinical work.

Section 3: Research and practical applications of fourth generation logotherapists

Hegger, A.T.

69-70

EN

In this section we present two articles, one of a researcher, the other a spiritual caregiver. Both are fourth generation logotherapists. They offer good examples of how logotherapy is moving on in a new generation and finding new creative ways to express itself. The articles are examples of the direction logotherapy and existential analysis can go in a clear and unclouded future.

Traveling Frankl’s pathways to meaning: Exploring the creative, experiential and attitudinal in meaningful experiences of everyday life

Van de Goor, J.

71-78

EN

This qualitative case study explores the way Frankl’s creative, experiential and attitudinal pathways to meaning emerge in everyday life. Thereto, a narrative analysis was performed on transcripts of three interviews with people about a meaningful moment and its impact on life. The study deepens insight in the self-transcendent nature of the three pathways, showing different ways in which these pathways interrelate and give rise to each other. The creative pathway was found to follow from the experiential pathway, but also the other way around, to set the stage for the experiential pathway. The experiential pathway was traveled unintentionally as well as intentionally, in settings with both positive as well as negative valence. The experiential pathway thereby relates to both wonder as awe, the latter also appearing to be central in the attitudinal pathway aimed at embracing suffering. Finally, the study shows how coaches and therapists may help clients to travel the three pathways and become conscious of the way these are implicitly woven into the fabric of their life.

Section 4: Religion and spirituality

Hegger, A.T.

88-89

EN

In almost all of Frankl’s books one can find texts on psychiatry and religion. The last part of Frankl’s collected works is dedicated to his texts on psychotherapy, psychiatry and religion (Frankl, 2018). Although this part V of his collected works does not contain any of his books, the volume consists of more than three hundred pages. It is clear that this was a subject close to his heart. In a time (the second half of last century) when the psychiatrists and psychotherapist were neglectful, skeptical or even overtly hostile toward religion (Verhagen, 2019, p. 29), Frankl had an open and sympathetic mind on the subject. At that time, it was against the mainstream and courageous to be positive on religion. Meanwhile Frankl warned against any form of religious psychotherapy. Frankl has maintained that logotherapy is a secular system and he cautioned not to overstep the boundaries between psychiatry and religion. 'Religion meant more and was fundamentally different than specific anthropological categories – the free individual decision and responsibility – make of it’ (Frankl, 2018, p. 9, introduction of the editors; translated from German). But if we take a closer look, the question arises whether Frankl’s own religious propositions are intermingled, at an unconscious level perhaps, with logotherapy. This is the issue the two articles in this section reflect upon. As in the previous section, all the authors are fourth generation logotherapists and offer a fresh look on Frankl’s position on religion.

Section 5: A guide for life

Hegger, A.T.

109

EN

Frankl did not see himself as a guide for life. He was not a guru. Conscience is guiding man. Nevertheless, Frankl has inspired many. One of them is Joep Wijsbek, the author of the article in this section. Wijsbek is an example of how our four generations categories do not always fit. Although he met Frankl and was encouraged by him during crises he had to face, he was not educated by Frankl. Besides, he did not build educational institutions, although he was one of the first to practice logotherapy in management and wrote about it (Wijsbek, 2009). If we should place him in one of our generational categories, we ought to place him in de third generation of logotherapists. In this personal story Wijsbek guides us through milestones in his life and shows how Frankl was meaningful for him.

Mijn dialoog met Viktor Frankl

Wijsbek, J.

110-118

NL

To be or not to be on the spectrum, that’s the question. Het gaf me stof tot nadenken.
